The Wild Woman Series explores the feminine wild spirit through strikingly surreal imagery that embody dream-like, mythical worlds created by BK DIECI.
The body of work began as a series of sketches BK DIECI developed during a recent period in her life when she was undergoing difficulties not only with autoimmune diseases, but her mental health. The drawings allowed BK DIECI to work through her anxiety, depression and other conflicting emotions as a form of art therapy. There are a few outliers in the images, which indicate extreme moments in time when emotions were at their peak height.
The culmination of these studies was the final work “Lost Bones”, which is the full colour artwork shown at the top of this page. The work is a deep reflection of the artist’s growth from the ground up. Common motifs include water and sea creatures, which the artist associate’s with the elements of calm, recovery and safety. Even in moments of severe pain, trauma or confusion the work indicates there is hope in the rebuilding of the bones and mythical beings that exist in the starry night sky.
Wild Woman is knowing that despite hardships, life’s detours or obstacles that are thrown from all directions there is the ability to start again. It takes time, healing, self-love, a gentle hand and knowing it is okay to leave in order to recover before returning once more. It is a rebuilding of self to become the woman we want to be without the imposition of societies, others close to us or most importantly our own expectations. The ‘Wild Woman’ series is a discovery of self-acceptance and learning to trust oneself in order to love, live and breath again.
